General Description

Sapwood is clearly defined from the heartwood, which is brown with a pink tinge and darkening on exposure. A corewood, which is streaked with layers of darker coloured to almost black wood is often developed. Grain is straight or shallowly interlocked. Texture is moderately fine and even. Growth rings are distinct, produced by terminal layers of wood parenchyma. Vessels are with simple perforations, medium-sized, few or moderately few in number, solitary interspersed with radial pairs and multiples of generally 2 to 4 (occasionally up to 5) in a series and occasional clusters, sometimes the solitary vessels and sometimes the radial groups predominating, evenly distributed without any arrangement; deposits are common. Wood parenchyma is of both apotracheal and paratracheal types; apotracheal type occurs as irregularly spaced terminal bands; paratracheal type occurs as vasicentric, tending to aliform. Rays are moderately fine, generally visible to the naked eye and in some species fai rly prominent on the radial surface. Vertical canals are smaller than the vessels, contained in some of the terminal layers of wood parenchyma, secreting oil when freshly cut; present in Sindora spp. but absent in Copaifera palustris.
